NAAP CONFERENCE 2015 – WELCOME TO DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA!
Do you usually get the itch for a vacation in the spring? Do you feel claustrophobic after a long cold winter? The NAAP 2015 Conference just might be the answer for your whole family! This year the host site is Daytona Beach, Florida at the wonderful Hilton Daytona Resort right on the ocean. At $99.00 a night for 4 people, it can’t be beat for a vacation get-away.
There is so much to do in the area. Right at the resort, besides all the normal amenities like pools, spas, hot tubs and several onsite bars and live entertainment, there is a kidszone with planned activities and a children’s pool, the beach is right out the back door with no dunes to navigate, the hotel offers beach volleyball and even boogie boards, bicycles and special needs surf chairs. There’s a movie theater, the pier and a very active boardwalk next door, the Daytona Lagoon water park is across the street and tons of shops and restaurants just steps away.
If you’re feeling like you want to venture further out, you’ll find history and attractions close by.
• Obviously one of the most popular is the Daytona International Speedway, where they give tours all year long. See the changes they are making and know that you are at the door of racing history. Daytona’s racing history dates back to the early 1900’s when the inventors of autos and motorcycles began testing and racing on the beach, then later moveing the whole race to the Speedway.
• Many visitors “to do” lists include parasailing, canoeing and boat tours which are just 10 minutes away. There’s even deep sea fishing charters, air boat tours and pier fishing available within minutes.
• Tour the winter home of John D. Rockefeller, The Casements or the home of Dr. Mary Bethune founder of the first black college who later became the advisor to 5 U.S. Presidents. Both her home and gravesite are right here in Daytona and marked as a historical site.
• Visit Angell & Phelps for a FREE Chocolate Factory tour and receive free samples while you’re there.
• The Ponce de Leon Lighthouse and Museum is close and is Florida’s tallest lighthouse at 175’. It has 213 steps, was built in 1887 and is the home of one of the largest optics in the world. It sits in the midst of many historic buildings that make up a little village you’ll enjoy roaming through.
• The Marine Science Center is located just past the lighthouse and specializes in sea turtle and seabird rehabilitation. They welcome visitors and is truly a fun way to gain a better understanding of sea life.
• If you’re a baseball fan, definitely don’t miss the “The Jack”. It’s the Jackie Robinson Ballpark, built in 1917 and where the baseball legend broke the color barrier in professional sports when he played his first spring training game in 1946.
There are a plethora of other historical sites, museums, water opportunities and family fun too numerous to list but if you’re like some of us, its always a pleasure just to make a late run to Krispy Kreme for hot doughnuts and is a welcome way to wind down a late night.
