Designing Programs Around a Nursing Identity
In many senior living communities, there are residents who were nurses who still try to step back into that role. You see it in the way they move toward the nurses station, in how closely they observe staff, and in the small ways they try to help. These moments are often redirected, but they point to something much deeper than a behavior that needs to be managed. They reflect identity.
Nursing shapes how someone thinks, responds, and interacts with the world around them. That sense of responsibility and care becomes part of who they are, and it does not disappear with age or diagnosis. It continues to show up, especially through routine and procedural memory. Nurses Week creates a natural opportunity to recognize this, but it can also be used as a turning point to shift how programming is approached.
When programming is designed with this in mind, it becomes less about introducing new activities and more about creating familiar moments that reflect the work they once did every day.
