Welcome to “NAAP Chats” where you can interact with other Activity Professionals in an informal discussion.  You can join us on your computer or by phone by following the directions for “GoToMeeting”.

Here is how you can come join in the discussion.  If you connect with your computer, you will see the screen with any slides that the presenter may be showing.   You do not have to download any program…. just click on the link be and you can “jump on”.  You will be automatically muted however you can join in the conversation by typing in your questions in the Chat Box.

As recreation professionals, our days are busy! We blink and our morning has passed. We blink again and there goes the afternoon! But are we truly present in our days or are we constantly looking ahead or behind?

During this webinar, you will learn about awareness and mindfulness and how they can easily and quickly become an important part of your wellness plan and your busy life. I will help you begin your practice with several exercises that you can use right away.

We will also discuss the therapeutic ideas behind mindfulness and why it can help relieve stress and anxiety and bring focus, clarity and peace into your day.

Speaker Biography

Karen’s passions lie in the arts and education.  These two disciplines have woven a thread throughout her paid professional and volunteer life and she is grateful.  Early training in psychology and gerontology provided the opportunity to develop music and exercise classes with OASIS and the University of Missouri at St. Louis.

Earning a Master of Arts in Teaching, Karen was an early childhood music educator and coordinator with the Community Music School of Webster University. She developed intergenerational music programming with local senior communities.

Later she was honored to work in the hospice world as a volunteer coordinator and bereavement coordinator. Karen brought the arts into her work through grief support groups, specialized volunteer training, community outreach and unique staff support retreats. It is here that she began her journey into mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness work has completely changed how Karen views life and her day to day activities. She is proud to be a lifelong student and facilitator of mindfulness meditation.

Most recently, as the Recreation Director for The Sarah Community, Karen brings her love of the arts and education to the clients with individualized programming. She feels that she is an important part of a team of professionals that believe in person-centered care and work to make The Sarah Community a true home for clients.

Outside of her job, Karen spends time as a certified interpretive guide for the Endangered Wolf Center and as education team leader for Manchester Arts. She designs and facilitates art and education programming for the community.

“I have varied interests and love working with people of all ages,” Karen says. “Mindfulness practice helps me enjoy my busy life and keeps me balanced.”


Here are some general instructions for NAAP Chats:  The evening NAAP Chat will always take place on the third Tuesday of the month at 8pm ET, 7pm CT, 6pm MT, 5pm PT.  You must remain on the session the entire 60 minutes to qualify for the CE’s.  After the session you must complete the Summary Form which can also be found below on this page.  Send (email) it  directly to the Education Outreach Trustee.  This summary MUST be a minimum of 100 words on what you learned from the session.  Please be sure to include your signature.

After completing this process you can plan to receive your continuing education certificate in approximately 2 weeks.  If it does not arrive or you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email  Reminder that CEs are only given to current NAAP Members.

NOTE:  NAAP Chats are scheduled for 7:00 pm CST unless otherwise noted.
