How important is this question?
“MDS- F0300: Should [an] Interview for Daily and Activity Preferences Be Conducted?
“CMS’s RAI MDS 3.0 Manual CH 3: MDS Items [F] SECTION F: PREFERENCES FOR CUSTOMARY ROUTINE AND ACTIVITIES Intent: The intent of items in this section is to obtain information regarding the resident’s preferences for his or her daily routine and activities. This is best accomplished when the information is obtained directly from the resident or through family or significant other, or staff interviews if the resident cannot report preferences. The information obtained during this interview is just a portion of the assessment. Nursing homes should use this as a guide to create an individualized plan based on the resident’s preferences, and is not meant to be all-inclusive.”
This question starts a relationship with you and the resident. Some say it’s like “hearing the resident’s voice”. This tool helps you identify the residents’ ability to communicate, and their need to effectively express their daily preference. As the Activity Professional meets and greets each resident, the professional should have these intents in mind. Residents are likelier to remember their own pattern of daily living when a conversation is being held. The Activity Professional should be very familiar with the Activity portion of the MDS – F0300 to F0800 to stimulate a conversation that will help steer the resident to share their preferences. Remember, the residents’ day should not be about our day or our schedule but about the residents’ own inclinations. These preferences should be shared with all disciplines so care plans are appropriate and individualized.
Another motivation for a beneficial meet and greet is to program meaningful activities. The more you know about your residents, the more it will show on your calendar. The more your calendar shows will help you communicate your budget needs, particularly staffing and spending.
Also remember: As Activity Professionals, we are centric to the residents’ lives. We are their best moments.
