How To Create Functional Life Stations

Rachael Wonderlin  MS

So often, we see Life Stations that look pretty and well-organized but that simply aren’t functional. Examples include “travel stations,” “workbenches” and “reminiscence areas.” We see an over-reliance on sensory items and objects that don’t, on their own, provide any intrigue for people who might approach. Residents don’t use them because they have no idea what to do there.

In this webinar, we talk through what works and what doesn’t work when building Life Stations. Participants will learn the most important elements of creating functional, interesting stations that engage individuals living with cognitive impairments.

Webinar Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn why sensory and reminiscing stations aren’t always effective for staff or people living with dementia

  • Participants will understand how to create and utilize functional Life Stations

  • Participants will brainstorm their own Life Station

  • Participants will understand how to speak to families about the Life Stations

Social connection is one of the strongest predictors of emotional well-being, cognitive health, and overall quality of life for older adults — yet loneliness remains a growing concern in senior living communities. This session equips activity and life enrichment professionals with practical, person-centered strategies to foster meaningful relationships among residents, families, and staff. Participants will explore innovative programming ideas, environmental approaches, and communication techniques that strengthen belonging and reduce isolation. Whether working in Independent Living, Assisted Living, or Skilled Nursing, attendees will leave with actionable tools to build a socially vibrant and emotionally supportive community.

Webinar Learning Objectives:

  • Identify at least three evidence-informed approaches to reduce loneliness and increase social engagement among residents across all levels of care.

  • Design activity programs and environmental modifications that promote peer-to-peer connection, emotional expression, and a sense of belonging.

  • Implement person-centered communication and leadership strategies that empower residents, involve families, and strengthen community-wide social integration.

Engaging People who Feel Un-Engage-Able

Rachael Wonderlin  MS

“How do I engage someone in activities when they don’t want to do anything with the rest of the group?” “What do I do if one of my residents doesn’t like to paint, sing, do physical activities, or seemingly anything else?” We receive questions like this on a regular basis. The challenge with trying to provide care and programming for a large group is that not everyone is going to want to do (or be excited about) the same type of thing.

In this webinar, we talk through ways to engage people living with dementia who feel otherwise “un-engageable.” They don’t want to do any of the normal activities, and seem easily agitated or bored when things aren’t going their way. What do we do?

Webinar Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn how to engage people living with dementia in unique ways
  • Participants will understand more about becoming a Dementia Detective
  • Participants will brainstorm ways to engage their own residents or clients
  • Participants will understand how to assign and engage care staff and families with programming
