The NAAP Leadership Academy is a comprehensive, year-long professional development program aimed at empowering Activity Professionals with the abilities, skills, knowledge, and connections necessary to thrive in leadership roles within the healthcare sector. The NAAP Education Council has crafted a curriculum that aligns with professional standards of practice. Participants in the Leadership Academy will embark on an educational journey, engaging in both in-person and virtual sessions (attendance on camera is required).
Academy Objectives and Outcomes:
- Develop a foundation of practical leadership skills and core competencies. Elevate the profession further through strategic activities that you can immediately apply in your role.
- Discover diverse perspectives in understanding the issues facing aging services. Recognize activity paradigms that shift innovative programming to include the social model of care.
- Design successful team building and strategic planning. Focus on finding balance from managing to leading fearlessly.
Academy Experience:
The experience starts at the NAAP Annual Conference with a four-hour pre-conference session. Following that, there will be six two-hour Zoom meetings throughout the year. Participants will read two books from the Leadership Academy list and submit a 1000-word report for each book. Additionally, you will complete a group project during the year. A graduation ceremony will occur at the next Annual Conference, totaling 26 hours of education.
Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a NAAP Leadership University Certificate, which can assist them in obtaining future promotions or advanced employment positions.
Academy Eligibility:
- Full-time employment within a community enrichment field, 2 years or equivalent professional experience
- Member of NAAP or membership required upon acceptance into the program
- Commitment to attend all workshops and complete assignments
- Completion of a cohort group project and presentation

The Cohort Group Project will develop, plan, and present an educational session at the conference. The Leadership Academy Group Project necessitates collaboration among participants to tackle a specific challenge or opportunity in their field, utilizing the leadership skills and knowledge gained during the academy. This project will concentrate on enhancing resident engagement through innovative programming. It aims to establish a comprehensive plan for implementing programs that improve resident engagement and the quality of life.
Assessment and Research:Conduct surveys:
- Collect data from residents, families, and staff about existing programming and opportunities for improvement.
Identify Best Practices: Investigate successful programs at other assisted living facilities and creative activities that encourage socialization, mental stimulation, and physical health.
Goal Setting:
- Define Goals: Set clear, measurable objectives for the proposed programming enhancements (e.g., boost participation in activities by 30% within six months, introduce one new program each month).
- Identify Key Performance Indicators: Determine the indicators that measure success, such as resident satisfaction scores, event attendance, and staff feedback.
Program Development:
- Develop a Diverse Program Schedule: Plan a range of activities that cater to various interests and abilities, including arts and crafts, fitness classes, music therapy, intergenerational programs, and educational workshops.

Leadership Insights Through Literature
- To enhance understanding of leadership principles and practices through the reading and analysis of selected texts that explore various aspects of leadership. Participants will select from a diverse range of books on the provided list, which includes biographies of influential leaders, theoretical texts on leadership styles, and case studies of successful organizations.
- Participants will select two books from the provided list and write 1,000-word reflections on each one, concentrating on the lessons learned and their application in their leadership journey.
- Participants will cultivate enhanced critical thinking skills, expand their understanding of effective leadership, and create a toolkit of strategies for leading teams and organizations. This project will also promote collaboration and communication among course members.
- By synthesizing insights from diverse leadership texts, this reading project aims to inspire participants to adopt new perspectives and cultivate their leadership style, ultimately promoting their personal and professional growth.
Academy Notes:
- Next Cohort begins in 2027.
- Applications are due by March 26, 2027.
- The cost to participate in this year-long professional development opportunity is $3,500.
- All cohort participants must attend all scheduled Leadership meetings. Failure to attend will result in immediate dismissal from the program, and no refunds will be given.
- This program includes all in-person accommodations, hotel stays, program supplies, and attendance (registration and hotel stay) at the NAAP Annual Conference. Transportation, meals, and personal supplies are not included.
- Participants will be featured in NAAP publications and press releases throughout the year.
- Students will receive a badge to share while in the program.
- During the program, the cohort will complete a group project and provide an educational presentation at the NAAP Annual Conference 2028. Project work outside of the program dates may be required.
- Program meetings may have an opportunity for Continuing Education Credit.
