Why NAAP?
As I celebrate 10 years in management with NAAP, I would like to reintroduce an updated version of an old article.
In 1998, I was introduced to the National Association of Activity Professionals when I attended an annual conference in San Diego, CA. By that time in my career, I had been working in activities since 1985. I was fortunate to be part of an organization that supported quality of life and encouraged continuing education opportunities for all the activity staff. I had an incredible experience being in the same “room” with like-minded professionals and engaging in the amazing energy. I met many individuals who became my lifelong friends and mentors. It changed me!
Since then, I am regularly asked the following questions: “Why NAAP? Or why should I join a professional association?” My response is simple: “because we need each other!” Now, let’s make that response a bit more complex and break it down. What is an association? An association is a synergistic group, meaning that the effect of a collection of people is greater than just one. If we want to achieve greatness and advance in our careers, then an association can help further your goals.
Here are a few more reasons why:
Joining a group fosters a sense of security and trust, stemming from the creation of professional relationships. National associations such as NAAP assist individuals in achieving success in professional development by providing events and opportunities to expand your network. The National Association of Activity Professionals establishes professional standards, a scope of practice, and a code of ethics for Activity Professionals to uphold. NAAP also offers guidance and support through relevant information to ensure you remain updated on the latest federal guidelines and regulations. Networking is the best way to acquire the knowledge necessary for discovering new ideas, developing best practices, and finding methods to enhance the quality of life at the highest attainable level of well-being for the individuals you serve.
Joining NAAP provides access to valuable career resources. Did you know that NAAP features a job board on our website? Numerous healthcare organizations have used this resource to post job listings. We also offer a panel of experts that you can reach out to for specific questions regarding career issues.
Joining NAAP offers additional benefits, including live webinars twice a month and on-demand webinars. All of these can be accessed without leaving your work or home. NAAP recently convened in person at our 43rdannual conference, which was a wonderful experience. We gathered in unity to discuss pressing topics and current concerns affecting the healthcare industry.
Joining NAAP offers what I call the “hidden gem” benefit: the senior living hubs. This resource is filled with programming ideas, articles of interest, in-services, the Ask-NAAP segment, five-minute flares, and regulatory updates. NAAP also provides various scholarships that help individuals achieve more opportunities for success through membership, discounts, and supportive services.
So, back to the beginning when the question of “Why NAAP?” was asked. I now reply with, “Why Not?” Joining NAAP will provide you with a competitive advantage that helps increase your exposure in networking and supports your personal and professional growth. Your membership leads to empowerment!
