Why NAAP?
In 1998 I was introduced to the National Association of Activity Professionals when I attended an annual conference in San Diego, CA. I had worked in activities since 1985 at this point in my career. I was very lucky to work with an organization that supported quality of life and encouraged continuing education opportunities for all the activity staff. I had the most incredible experience being in the same “room” with like-minded professionals and engaging in the amazing energy. I met many individuals who became my life-long friends and mentors. It changed me!
Since then, I am asked regularly the following questions, “Why NAAP? Or why should I join a professional association?” My response is simple, “because we need each other!” Now, let’s make that response a bit more complex and break it down. What is an Association? an association is a synergistic group, meaning that the effect of a collection of people is greater than just one. If we want to achieve greatness and advance in our careers, then an association can help further your goals.
Here are a few more reasons why:
Joining a group allows for a sense of security and trust. This comes from creating professional relationships. National associations like NAAP help individuals succeed in professional development with providing events and opportunities to enhance your network. The National Association of Activity Professionals provides professional standards, a scope of practice, and a code of ethics for Activity Professionals to adhere to and follow. NAAP also provides advice and support with relevant information consistently to ensure you are up to date on the latest federal guidance and regulations. Networking is the greatest way to gain the knowledge needed to learn new ideas, create best practices, and offer ways to provide quality of life at the highest practicable level of well-being with the individuals you serve.
Joining NAAP gives you the access and ability to take advantage of career resources. Did you know that NAAP has a job board on our website? Multiple healthcare organizations have utilized this resource to post job listings. We also provide a panel of experts that you can contact for specific questions on career issues.
Joining NAAP offers additional benefits including live webinars twice a month and webinars on demand. These can all be done without leaving your work or home. NAAP recently met in person at our 40th annual conference. It was wonderful to gather in unity and discuss hot topics and real-life current concerns affecting the health care industry.
Joining NAAP offers what I call the “hidden gem” benefit, the toolbox. This resource is filled with programming ideas, articles of interest, in-services, five-minute flares, and regulatory updates. NAAP also offers various scholarships too. These scholarships help individuals achieve more opportunities for success through membership, discounts, and supportive services.
So back to the beginning when the question of “Why NAAP?” was asked. I now reply with, “Why Not?” Joining NAAP will provide you with a competitive advantage to help increase your exposure in networking and developing and maintaining your personal and professional growth. Your membership leads to empowerment!
